Vinyl wrapping is becoming increasingly popular among boat owners for its clean, modern look and customisable finish. However, vinyl wraps are more delicate than traditional gelcoat or painted surfaces and can be easily damaged by boat or marina fenders. Most fenders are made from PVC, which tends to grip and drag on the wrap’s surface. When that happens, it can scuff, lift, or tear the vinyl — especially during docking or when rafting up alongside other boats.
For boats kept in a marina berth, one of the most effective ways to protect your vinyl wrap is to install dock wheels fitted with fleece dock wheel covers. When your boat contacts the dock, the soft fleece surface allows the wheel to rotate smoothly along the vinyl wrap instead of dragging against it. This significantly reduces friction and helps prevent marks or abrasions caused by fender or dock contact.
Rafting up is a popular practice in many boating regions — from calm bays to busy anchorages. However, when boats are rafted together, they move both vertically and sideways due to wind, swell, or passing wakes. This constant motion can quickly wear down a vinyl-wrapped hull if the wrong type of fenders or covers are used. Using fleece fender covers provides a much softer protective barrier, reducing friction and helping prevent scuffing during raft-ups or when anchored close to others.
Whatever type of fender or cover you use, keeping it clean is essential. Salt crystals, dirt, and grime can be abrasive and will damage the vinyl wrap over time. Regularly rinse your fenders, covers, and hull with fresh water, and wash off any salt build-up after each trip. The cleaner your fender covers and vinyl wrap stay, the longer your wrap will last and maintain its appearance — whether you’re boating in Australia, the Pacific, or anywhere around the world.
